About Daytona Beach Shores
“The Shores” as locals refer to Daytona Beach Shores, was organized in 1960 by local business leaders convinced that a smaller community could provide better services to its residents. The City was incorporated on April 22, 1960 and is located between unincorporated Wilbur-by-the-Sea to the south, and Daytona Beach to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.0 square miles and has a population of approximately 5500 residents. Daytona Beach Shores is located on a barrier Island bordered between the Atlantic Ocean on the east, by the Halifax River (Intracoastal Waterway) on the west.
Daytona Beach Shores has a humid subtropical climate, typical for a city in the southeastern United States. Summers are hot and humid, with highs usually in the 90s, and a heat index often exceeding 100 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent in the summer, and hot, humid weather can last right through the fall months. Winters are usually dry and mild, marked by a constant series of cold fronts and warm-ups. Temperatures in spring are famously pleasant with warm afternoons, cool evenings, and far less humidity. This beach-going weather attracts tourists back to the beaches usually by mid-March.
The Bella Vista contains some one of the newest and most luxurious condos in Daytona Beach Shores.
In the early 1970s to the late 1980s, the City enjoyed a rapid building phase. Today, over 80 percent of the residents live in high-rise condominiums that span along the Atlantic Ocean. In 1997, residents voted in a straw ballot to limit the height of future buildings to 12 stories. The City Council approved the height limit in 1998.
As a resort and retirement community built with tourism in mind, Daytona Beach Shores attracts visitors from all over the world providing year-round activities including resorts and spas, parasailing, tennis, miniature golf, and even a par three golf course. Have your choice of great fishing in the surf, off the pier, or on the Halifax River. Climb the lighthouse or run your dog on the beach in beautiful Ponce Inlet just 5 minutes to the south of Daytona Beach Shores.
