The History of South Daytona, Florida
South Daytona is a separate city from Daytona Beach with an interesting history going back to the 1800s: it was once a town called Blake, named after a wealthy businessman named Alpheus P. Blake from Boston. There were just 40 resident families but many non-resident property holders in the early days, and these ambitious settlers were profitably farming orange groves and vegetable crops. Blake opened its first post office in 1878 and received train services from the north around 1886.
By the beginning of the 1900s, this beautiful region on the Atlantic Ocean coast of North Florida began to expand. In 1926, the modern city of Daytona Beach was born when the towns of Daytona, Daytona Beach, and Seabreeze were consolidated into one. Daytona Beach annexed all the adjacent territories, including the town of Blake but the residents of Blake hired an attorney to protect their independence. Around 1938, Blake broke away from Daytona Beach and renamed itself South Daytona.
